What's New At Murco

Murco A'Musings (7/14/10)

Man oh man, did you miss a great auction in Lake Geneva! The setting couldn’t have been more phenomenal… stately, wooded grounds, sunshine and sparkling Lake Geneva right in the backyard!

But the glorious setting did little to calm my pre-auction nerves. This being our first out-of-state auction, we were anxious to see who would show up. The doors opened at 8am and we had to call in extra security to hold off the throngs of waiting masses… NOT. For a few terrifying opening minutes we had only one prompt buyer taking measurements as us Murco girls nervously paced the home wondering if anyone was going to show. But soon enough, show they did!

But not everybody who attended the auction planned on being there. In fact, some of the biggest buyers we had were from locals stumbling (literally) upon us! Get this… neighbors 3 mansions down (not kidding) happened to be beginning the plans for building a house in Stough, Vermont.  On a regular morning outing they walked right past the auction and BAM--they bought every window and every door in the joint! Needless to say, we were thankful for the good fortune! And it was clearly meant to be--the architect who designed the house that was being knocked down was also the architect who was doing their house in Vermont. The builder who was putting up the new house was also the builder of the house that was going down. Are you digging what I’m putting down? Crazy, eh?  What a small world! What I’m really happy about is that so much of this house went on to live a second life.  The fact that every single window and door is going to dictate the design of new construction gives me so much satisfaction.  I mean, how cool is that?

Aside from the accidental big spenders, we also had a great turnout of people traveling up from Illinois as well as some Murco auction newbies from Wisconsin who came out to check out their first sale with us. Thanks to everyone for coming out, we hope you had as much fun as we did! We hope to see you—and everyone you know—at our next auction!

One last note—we had a lot of people asking us WHY this house was going down. Well… we don’t know why. That decision was made before we came in, but before it was we do know that every single option was pursued before the final decision was made to demolish the home. They even tried to pick up and move the house but unfortunately it couldn’t be done. Luckily the owners called us in to save what we could, because absolutely nobody wanted these materials to go to waste.

And although Murco was their last resort, I feel really good about how much waste we reduced.  We sold the roof, the kitchen, all bathrooms, built-ins, pillars, railings, stone--you name it, we sold it! There’s literally nothing left! Unbelievable deals were had by all and everyone walked away happy.  Yeehaw!
